With a rich academic background, James holds degrees in Anthropology from Southern Connecticut State University and Forensic Anthropology from Boston University School of Medicine. Their theological journey led them to Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where they earned a Master of Divinity, focusing on Biblical studies, social ethics, and queer theology. During their time at seminary, James was awarded the prestigious Malcolm Boyd Veritas Award for their advocacy and impactful social justice work within the LGBTQIA+ community.
In previous roles, James served as Digital Minister and Seminary Intern at Fort Washington Collegiate Church. They also contributed to the pandemic response as the Staff and Volunteer Coordinator at a vaccination site that administered over 6,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
James is the editor of Beyond Worship: Meditations on Queer Worship, Liturgy, & Theology, an anthology recognized with a 2023 Independent Publishers Bronze Medal for amplifying the voices of queer and transgender theologians across diverse faith traditions.
