The Promise in the Magnificat

By Rev. Timothy Warren

In the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), Mary proclaims that God will cast down the mighty from their thrones and lift up the lowly. The hungry will be filled with good things, and the rich will be sent away empty.

These are words of hope for the oppressed, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised peoples of the world. It may seem that the rich and powerful are in control at the moment, but nothing is permanent, and there is a time and season for everything. Today, the rich and powerful grow fat on the labors of the working class. They flaunt their wealth, mock the weak, and trample on the poor, but a day of recompense is coming.

No amount of wealth or power can save a person’s soul or keep them from facing their mortality. Even the powerful and mighty will see their strength wither with age, but the souls of the righteous and just will walk in peace and be filled with God’s love. Don’t fret when you see the rich prosper from their schemes, for they will face God one day and be made to give an account. But you who are poor, weak, and humble will be lifted up.

Boldly walk in God’s love, loving one another as Christ loves us, and seeking to serve Christ in all people, especially those whom he calls the “least of these.” May the peace of God keep your hearts and minds secure in the knowledge of God’s love for you.
