Why ‘Gay’ is ‘OK’
By Julie Taylor
We’ve likely all read, or at least heard about, the ‘clobber passages’ in the bible condemning homosexuality.
Genesis 19:4–25 Leviticus 18:22 Romans 1:25-27 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
So how do you know if God loves you, or condemns you?
We’re not unlike our ancient biblical ancestors in that we struggle with focusing solely on God, forgiving one another, and accepting the differences all around us. In 1500 B.C., biblical times, worshiping just one God (monotheism) was unheard of! Much of the world at that time were made up of nations that worshiped many gods (polytheism). These many gods offered many different things, and worship practices varied depending on what you wanted. What the bible refers to as ‘false god worship’ sometimes included licentious, unholy acts. A fertile family line, a fertile herd, virility, was a desirable, and sought after quality. Status mattered more than gender, and being dominant-was high status.
FACT: False god worship is mentioned Over 8000 times in the bible!
Jesus tells us in John 6:37 “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
These ‘clobber’ passages ALL had to do with immoral behavior that was a result of false god worship. What is condemned is forcing oneself on another, not putting God first, and unfaithful activities outside of a committed relationship.
A loving, committed relationship with God at the center is nothing to repent for, friends!
Cultures change over time, and what society commands as ‘acceptable.’ When we read the bible we must read it to understand, not categorize or condemn. This sacred text is an anthology of mankind’s relationship with God. When it is used in the context for which it was written, it can teach us invaluable lessons about our spirit-walk with the Lord. As a spiritual ‘tool,’ as with any other tool, however, it can also do a great deal of damage.
People are far more critical of those who are different, and there will always be differences of opinions when it comes to social norms, in any culture. However, it’s important to remember that Jesus tells us to love one another (John 13:34), forgive and pray for enemies (Matthew 5:44), and turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-40).
God doesn’t condemn you! He loves you, and He wants you to seek Him.
